Political Continuity for Nauru with Re-Election of President Following National Poll

Nauru’s President David Adeang was re-elected unopposed for a second term following a national poll held on Saturday 11 October.

Nauruan voters turned out in force on election day to elect 19 MPs, with parliament reconvening three days later to choose a Speaker and President. Former president and cabinet minister Marcus Stephen prevailed in a vote of MPs to assume the role of Speaker, with Isabella Dageago elected as Deputy Speaker.

The Speaker presided over a vote to choose the President, and in an unopposed vote, the MPs elected David Adeang for the second time. President Adeang will form a new Cabinet from the MPs elected to Nauru’s 25th parliament. Up to 150 officials and observers assisted in the counting process at the election, including representatives from the UK, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands Forum.

Nauruans were also asked to decide on the length of parliamentary terms in a separate referendum on polling day. Electors voted against the referendum proposal to amend the constitution in increase terms from three to four years, by a margin of 4,601 to 3,714.

David Adeang first assumed the role of President in October 2023 and has previously served as Speaker of Parliament, and Nauru’s Minister of Finance and Justice.
